You know your an American when. . .

you have to regularly sell all of the junk that you thought you couldn't live without yesterday to make room for the junk that you think you need today.

My parents are preparing to move in a few weeks, and before they do they need to purge the piles of stuff that has built up in their garage and sheds. My father discovered that at auctions you can pick up truck loads of junk for very little money. He had many hours of fun sorting stuff into boxes and storing it away for another day. The new house does not have as many places to stash all this stuff, nor does he really want to move it, so it has to go.

So, for the last two days he has had dozens of people swarming on his driveway bartering to buy junk for 50 cents instead of a dollar. Some get great deals, but most just move the junk from one cluttered home to another. Of course, I am not immune from this obsessive need to have stuff. We put one box of stuff into the sale, and will walk away with two boxes. Yes, my home is a genuine junk bank. That is why I walk in the back door, step over stuff. Open the kitchen door, step over another pile of stuff, then make my way past counters buried six inches in stuff to a room whose floor is covered in toys and stuff.

Sometimes I think it would be best to loose everything just to be set free from all the stuff that I spend so much time trying to keep clean and organized. But alas, whenever I try to organize my stuff it starts with a trip to the store to buy more stuff to help me in my organization. Does that seem backwards or what?
