The nature of surprise

The sonogram is done, but it was a bit of a let down. With Isaiah it was almost magical, seeing our baby for the first time. This time, we had a good deal of stress just getting to the appointment. Then to complicate things, the technician didn't talk about what she was doing much. However, it was most frustrating because she was unable to determine the baby's sex - something that we really wanted to know.

From the bits of evidence we have, I believe we will be having a little girl, but that may just be my heart talking. The reality is we now have to do like people have done since the beginning of time and wait for the baby to arrive. Perhaps God, in his infinite wisdom, planned things this way to humble us and to make us appreciate the gift of our children all the more.

Yes, that does make sense. As a child I always wondered what was in my Christmas presents. However, one year I really wanted something and realized that there was nothing keeping me from finding out what was underneath the wrapping paper if I really wanted to know. I remember that Christmas there was almost no surprises, and it seemed that something important was missing. There was, I did not get to experience the joy of a wish granted and I had to deal with the guilt of hiding my activities from my parents. My point is simply this, surprises can be good things. They make life interesting. I guess life just got more interesting.

Update: a few months later Melissa began seeing Dr. Bennet, the doctor that would handle the end of her pregnancy. The good doctor was kind enough to take us to the imaging room to try to get another look at the baby. Ironically, once again the umbilical cord was once again right between the legs, and the gender could not be determined for certain. Dr. Bennet said the tissues looked like a girl, but that she was not sure. So, we continue await the moment of surprise when we finally know for sure if we will have a boy or girl joining our family.
